Caught up at last
(OOC: With this post for Session 36, I’ve finally got caught up with my backlog. I have not been emailing out my completion of the intermediate entries, but they are available for inspection in the adventure log. It is my plan to have future log updates out within two days of the session (which would also make it easier for me to put in place material for the future sessions).)
A supplicant supples
The young lady, is Anna. She is scrawny but older than she first appeared. 17? 18? She is a cleric, but not yet dedicated to a Power. She has lived amongst a group of more senior clerics who are followers of Sla, and who have been pressing her to join their ranks. She had been assigned by her superiors to direct what she kept referring to as “dark ones” to attack and destroy a party she would find on a the road. When the attack was successful, she was to search for, and return with, a hammer amongst the effects of the fallen. She expresses regret for having done so, but says that she did it only under duress. Failure, would result in the sacrifice of her brother, Arronel, to Sla..Many in the party try to discern her sincerity: Bignose being completely accepting. But even Flint seems to find no evasion in her recounting.
The rod is made of some hard yet supple semi-translucent grey material. Zan’s studies of the occult markings lead him to believe that this is some sort of “rod of vermin control”, which Anna confirms. She also says that she is able to wield it, to the degree that she can, by knowing a “word of control”, which she knows, but is unable to verbalize. It is more a “thought or concept” of control, that was imparted to her via direct mind contact.
Anna is frantic because of the likely fate of her brother, should she not return with the hammer she was sent for, and pleads for the party’s assistance..
The way to the camp where the other clerics, and her brother, are to be found is further north up the road, for almost a days travel, and then some hours trek through a path to the forest.
One concern of the party is that much of their spell casting resources were spent in defeating the ogre spiders.
New character enters
The party finds out that they have been trailed by a halfling, Bask, all the way since Eldarhaven. He finally slips up in his precautions and is found. He says that he had always had a thirst for adventure, and had wanted to join with the group when they had originally departed, but missed the original opportunity. And so, embarrassed, he wasn’t sure how to proceed, and just came along behind. Missing out in some of the adventures, and having some of his own on the way.
They all travel down the road. The forest around them is dark, with an impenetrable canopy. Great trees space out into the surrounding gloom. The way of the road is mostly clear, with occasional drifts of dead leaves. The party proceeds down to the road. Finally at the end of the day. and the gloom begins to shade to total darkness, there come to league 95, and the track off to the west. The decision is not to trek through the undoubtably spider infested darkness, but to await the morning. They move off to the east part of the road, camp, and spend an uneventful night.
Highday, the 64th of Astral
“I’ll ‘see’ your blindness and raise you…”
At the first stirrings of the forest birds, the party rouses itself and prepares, Flint communes, while Zan consults a volume that he summons out of nothing to which he afterwards returns it. The wagon and mounts are to be left behind, though not so constrained that they couldn’t protect themselves, at least that is the intention. They depart around 6:30, and after an hour winding through the trees, Anna alerts them that they are drawing near the camp.
Bask goes forward to reconnoiter and sees a clearing in the forest, still shadowed but not so dark as the deep forest. Within it is a small encampment, with a number of crude huts, one a little larger than the rest. In the center of the clearing is a raised platform/altar, surrounded by six humans (clerics). Atop the platform stands another young human, with a distinct family resemblance to Anna. The clerics are absorbed in their task: chanting while winding white bands of webbing around his body.
On Bask’s return with this information, the party moves in closer, the clerics apparently oblivious. The party is able to surprise them and move in after Zan casts haste on the party. Flint casts blindness on one of the clerics, who cries out and raises his hands to his now useless eyes. Bignose charges in and leaps to the top of the altar, and grabs the unprotesting Arronel (for so it is).. Anna also charges in and grapples with another of the clerics.
A swarm of spiders erupts from one of the huts. The grappled cleric easily breaks free of Anna But before any of the others can react, the blinded cleric raises a small object from around his neck, and angrily shouts some unintelligible words, and deeper darkness falls on himself, his fellows and almost the entire clearing. Zan sends out a fireball into the darkness, which provides a momentary glow, hitting two of the clerics. Bignose leaps off the altar with Arronel in his arms and attempts to stumble his way out of the darkness. There is much cursing and milling about.
The matter is far from decided. To Be Continued…
